Cold sawing is the mainstream cutting process for carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and various structural tubes in pipe fabrication workshops. Unlike abrasive cutting, cold sawing generates limited heat and delivers clean, low-burr cut ends ready for subsequent welding or machining. Among all available HSS grades, M42 high-speed steel stands out as the most widely adopted substrate for cold saw circular blades, and it has become the standard configuration for CNC tube cold saw machines.
M42 is an 8% cobalt high-speed steel. Compared with common M2 HSS, the added cobalt greatly improves red hardness, which means the blade can retain its cutting hardness at elevated cutting-edge temperatures without rapid softening or tooth blunting. This property is critical for continuous tube cutting cycles. When cutting stainless steel, thick-wall alloy pipes and galvanized tubes, friction heat concentrates on the tooth tip. M42 blades resist thermal softening far better, extending service life and avoiding frequent sharpening stops on automated cutting lines.
Balanced toughness and wear resistance is another core advantage. M42 reaches a working hardness of 67–69 HRC after precision vacuum heat treatment. It is harder than M2 while maintaining sufficient impact toughness to withstand the periodic shock load produced when the saw tooth engages and exits the pipe wall. Thin-wall pipes, profiled tubes and uneven stock often cause intermittent cutting impact; M42 blades are far less prone to chipped teeth or sudden fracture than harder but more brittle tool steel blades.
M42 circular saw blades support optional surface coatings such as TiN, TiAlN and AlTiN. Coated M42 further reduces friction, prevents workpiece material adhesion and eliminates built-up edges on the tooth face. The result is bright cut surfaces, minimal burrs, less secondary grinding work and stable cutting sound during long batch production. It adapts to multi-material production schedules, covering mild steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and alloy tubular parts, so fabricators do not need to stock many different blade grades.
From an operational cost perspective, M42 offers excellent overall economy. Its longer usable life reduces blade change downtime and lowers the total consumption cost per cut piece. It fits perfectly on standard CNC cold saws including MC425CNC and other tube cutting machines, with flexible customization of diameter, thickness, tooth pitch and tooth form according to pipe size and wall thickness.
